CV

If you're interested in hiring me, email me for a PDF CV and recommendations; Depending on your project I can arrange for, or recommend additional team members. Much of my code is available online, just have a look around here or at sourceforge. Since code is not everything..

Vision

As of 2008 I look back on over 11 Years of being on gnu/Linux. It's been a steep hill, but the view and possibilities up here are gorgeous.

I'm dreaming of a world where professional artistic creativity is free of financial interest and dependencies. - surely you're grinning now - I'll retain a sad smile upon this Utopia and point to ongoing efforts instead: linuxaudio.org, blender.org or ardour.org.

To me Free Software (FLOSS) represents the railroad track of the 21 century. Analog to modern trains that have evolved beyond dreams of the 14th and 17th century railroad pioneers, postmodern software needs to rely on open standards in order to become self sustainable. The fact that the fastest engine of the day is commercial does not bother me too much as long as it can run on an open infrastructure.

I'm a pragmatic proponent of “Nimm's wie es kommt, aber sorge dafuer das es so kommt wie Du es nehmen willst..” - For the time being the best thing that could happen to me would be have a larger studio; but I won't say no to a copy of musimathics or a box of dark chocolate.

Living on free software

Demanding Art-Installations were hard to get by, so I went to gain experience assembling the postgeSQL live-cd, got hackactive at open-search.org, added geo-info to greenpeace.nl, pushed ipodlinux and ended up as a LAD running http://linuxaudio.org since late 2005. Besides free-lance and non-profit work I was employed parttime by sonologic and mediamatic-lab in Amsterdam on the quest for my own studio.

As diverse as much of my work may seem they, they all have a common theme: scientific-challenge and a good portion of 70's free-feeling.

reVision

After departing the save haven of university (graduating 2002 in Physics, Univ. of Heidelberg and CERN) I spent two years as engineer at Berkely Lab before relocating to Amsterdam, NL in 2005 where I turned towards full-time open-source hardware/software development. I work as engineer and consultant usually in teams of one to five, occasionally part of larger collaborations.

expertise

It is hard to make a living on the FLOSS edge which requires flexibility and ingenuity, leading to a broad spectrum of expertise:

  • from FPGAs to Microcontrollers
  • from data-acquisition to data-mining
  • protocol and interaction design
  • from system-admin to system development
  • consulting, implementation and deployment
  • customized hi-end A/V multimedia applications.

interests

I'm eager to join larger projects but am still amazed how much one can squeeze out of a cheap PIC micro-controller. I like to be in reach of a complete project, design top-down, build from low-level relying on stable gnu-tools. Much inspiration and help comes from friends, colleagues and project-team mates.

Universities offered a good time of hardware development which is unfortunately hard to finance as freelancer. However my degree in Physics (2nd subjects: maths, electronics and harware-informatics) got me a solid background on solving problems. which is what I enjoy doing most.

More recently I'm working towards professional Audio/Video engineering. They're both two different but related beasts where maths-skills and scientific thinking comes in handy. I've had a few live performances, but am mostly acting behind the scenes. There are a few celebrated pieces, eg. the soundtrack for award-winning marzipanmovie.com; yet I'm still on the never ending road to learn the subtleties of mastering music.

Besides I'm a huge fan of inline replies and ascending time.
